Savvy Saving Sunday: Classic Steak & Caesar Salad

Welcome back to our weekly Savvy Saving Sunday cooking series!

This week we’re making a juicy steak & caesar salad for our budget family meal. It’s a super simple recipe that only takes minutes to make. When cooking steak for the family, you don’t have to splurge on a pricy cut of meat. Instead, look for a cheaper cut of meat, such as the top blade, or find a piece on sale. This makes the meal much more affordable and no less delicious!

Today’s steak & salad dinner comes out to $3.69 per serving with tax!

IngredientCost
Steak(1 pound cut into 4 portions – about 3/4-inch thick) $ 9.79
Butter (2 tablespoons softened and divided) $ 0.27
Fresh Parsley (1 teaspoon chopped) $ 0.16
Soy Sauce (1/2 teaspoon) $ 0.03
Romaine Lettuce (1 large shredded) $ 2.18
Caesar Dressing (6 tablepoons) $ 0.82
Parmesan Cheese (1 ounce) $ 0.87
Croutons (2 ounces) $ 0.65

Preparation

Lay out your ingredients.

Steak

Bring steak to room temperature. Season both sides with salt and pepper.

Mix together 1 tablespoon butter, parsley and soy sauce – add 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic if you love garlic butter!

In a large skillet, heat remaining butter over medium heat. Add steak; cook steak for 2-3 minutes each side for rare, 4 minutes each side for medium, and 5-6 minutes each side for well-done. Turn the steak only once, otherwise it will dry out.

Serve with (garlic) butter and caesar salad (below).

Caesar Salad

Combine romaine lettuce, caesar dressing and parmesan cheese in a large bowl and mix well. Sprinkle with croutons and serve immediately.
